Horn GmbH has been known since 1987 as a reliable partner for medium-sized companies, corporations, and public sector clients. As the company maintains partnerships with leading manufacturers, it provides exclusively high-quality IT hardware and accessories for computer and office needs.

The provider, with its headquarters and a large logistics center in Germany as well as a branch in Austria, has earned a strong reputation through personal service not only in these countries but also across Europe. In its own online shop, built with Shopware Beyond and utilizing B2B, it offers a wide range of computers and accessories, PC components, printers, scanners, all necessary equipment for telephone and video, networking and power supplies, as well as various cables and adapters.

Horn GmbH has a broad product range (200,000 items), is a successful participant in numerous tenders, and is a reliable partner that ships approximately 2,000 packages per day. In doing so, it guarantees smooth process execution and professional support.

Migration from Shopware 5 to 6

The Horn online shop was initially built with Shopware 5. This presented us with a major, responsible task – migrating the shop to the newer version. Before the Shopware migration from 5 to 6, Kenner Soft conducted a thorough analysis and created a roadmap for precise process tracking. We took care of the data transfer and its configuration. In the process, we completed a series of tasks:

  • All orders were migrated.
  • Users were transferred and added to a list.
  • We hid categories when the user did not have access to them.
  • Our team set up 301 redirects.
  • We created new email templates for employees.
Migration from Shopware 5 to 6

Data that could not be migrated automatically was manually entered. In addition to the Shopware 5 to 6 migration, Kenner Soft carried out all design work and integrations. Our online shop agency developed and implemented search popup layouts as well as a series of custom plugins. These include:

  1. Switch between grid and list view (Switch grid or list view) plugin for easily switching the product listing page display between list and grid;
  2. Webp Plugin for automatic conversion of JPG and PNG image files to WebP format;
  3. Email configuration (Mail configuration) module with extended standard functions for email sending;
  4. Order reference number (Order reference number) plugin to extend the standard order number and replace it with a custom-defined reference number.
  5. Login as employee (Login as employee) module for direct login of a company’s employees into their accounts to manage orders and address data.
  6. Optional fields (Optional fields) plugin for extending forms and data structures with additional, freely definable fields.
  7. Multi colors (Multi colors) module for displaying product variants in multiple colors in an attractive way.
  8. Customer product numbers (Customer product numbers) plugin to simplify communication and ordering processes in B2B, ensuring faster product search.
  9. Attachments Plugin for attaching additional information and documents directly to products.
  10. SAML Module for Single Sign-On, enabling access to corporate applications. This plugin was developed for a B2B client of the customer, who provides its own authentication servers (identity provider). The client registered in B2B can register and authenticate on the Horn website without manually entering their data. Simply clicking the corresponding link is sufficient. The employee function is realized with the “Shopware Commercial” plugin, which also supports authentication via SAML. Horn verifies the data sent by the B2B client’s server for correctness, then authenticates the user as an employee. If the employee does not yet exist, it is automatically created. The “employee” can then use the Horn website like a regular employee, place orders, and access other functionalities.
  11. Shopware Commercial Extensions (Extend Shopware Commercial) plugin for automatically providing commercial features.
  12. Migration Extension (Extend Migration) plugin for flexible configuration and adjustment of data migration.
  13. Free delivery indicator module for visualizing customer spending and signaling free delivery.

Finally, the shop was fully migrated from the older version. After the Shopware 5 migration was completely finished, our team reviewed everything and made the necessary improvements. Detailed testing revealed all inconsistencies affecting the shop’s proper functionality. Our team fixed critical errors in authorization and registration, search, categories, and filters. Account logic was optimized by removing unused address fields and enabling registration without personal data. To optimize the checkout process, our team corrected the delivery method and cost center field. Overall, Kenner Soft optimized logic for products, categories, and filters, and assisted with invoice conversion via the EDI converter.

Kenner Soft developed an interface for Horn Basis CMS. The system is used for full monitoring and transparent control of all internal company processes. All products are stored there and can be synchronized with Shopware 6. Using the interface, product information can be managed and bulk product updates can be performed without accessing Horn Basis directly.

For personalized search, our team implemented integration with FactFinder. We ensured that searched products could also be displayed in categories based on purchasing behavior. This helps buyers quickly find the right products and increases shop sales.

Conclusion

Our e-commerce agency worked on a complex process as part of the Horn project — a Shopware 6 migration. We elevated the shop to a completely new level, making it more performant and максимально flexible. The architecture is future-proof, and B2B processes have been simplified. As the shop now offers more features and can be creatively designed, the user experience improves and conversion rates increase.
